How to tell HW3 from HW4

Start with year and body. Highland Model 3 (new headlights, new interior, 2024+) is HW4 in this checker. Pre-refresh Model 3/Y (2017–2023 / 2020–2023) is HW3. That is the fast filter.

Then look at the front camera cluster behind the windshield. HW4 housings are larger and sit differently than HW3. Fender cameras on HW4 cars are a different module. If the seller only shows interior ambient shots, ask for a straight-on photo of the camera triple and the front fenders.

Software screens that say “Full Self-Driving computer” do not tell you HW3 vs HW4. Both generations used that language. The computer label in the frunk/service menu and the camera hardware do.

2024 Model Y is the trap year: same pre-Juniper body, mixed computers. This site will not call it HW4 from year alone. Get photos or walk away.
